el Sol Winery
El Sol Winery, formerly located at 8626 Lupin Way in Livermore, was a family-owned boutique winery celebrated for its small-lot, handcrafted wines. It specialized in robust reds including Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Syrah, and non-traditional varietals like Tempranillo, Mourvèdre, Sangiovese, and Carignan, alongside a traditional Port. El Sol emphasized sustainable practices, traditional winemaking, and extended aging for optimal readiness. The winery offered an intimate, seated tasting experience in a cozy rural setting with vineyard views, indoor/outdoor seating, picnic allowances, dog-friendly policies, and a curated boutique of jewelry and gifts. Wines were sold exclusively at the tasting room, focusing on true varietal expression and affordability.
el Sol Winery History
Founded in 2002 by Howard "Hal" Allen Liske—a retired Hayward Fire Department captain and chief after 36 years of service—and his wife Kathy, el Sol Winery began as a post-retirement passion project on their rural Livermore property. It was originally purchased in 1996 for beekeeping, but expanded into winemaking after Hal received 700 pounds of Zinfandel grapes from a friend in 1998. What Hal called his "downfall" and a "hobby gone haywire" quickly evolved into a bonded winery in 2003, sourcing grapes from regions like Lodi, Oakley, Brentwood, and local Livermore vineyards. Early tastings were held at shared spaces like Big White House Winery on Greenville Road, before opening its dedicated facility on Lupin Way. Hal, a hands-on "renaissance man" known for his athleticism, community coaching, and unpretentious style, crafted wines with Spanish-inspired labels reflecting family heritage, while Kathy managed the welcoming tasting room and community ties, including her role on the Livermore Valley Wine Growers Association board. The winery built a loyal following for its bold, patient-aged varietals and vibrant events over two decades.
