Bent Creek Winery is a small, family-owned boutique winery located in the rolling hills of southeast Livermore. Tom and Pat Heineman purchased the 12-acre property in 1981 and initially planned to grow grapes to sell to local wineries. In the late 1990s they planted Syrah vines for personal use. They partnered with friends Carol and Rich Howell, who shared their love of wine. The two couples studied enology at UC Davis and began making wine together.
Bent Creek Winery officially opened in 2002. The four friends handled every aspect of production, from vineyard work to winemaking and hospitality. They quickly gained recognition for their handcrafted, small-lot wines made primarily from Livermore Valley grapes, including bold reds like Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah, and award-winning Ports.
Tom Heineman, a key founder, passed away in 2019, but the winery continues under the families' involvement as a testament to friendship and passion for Livermore Valley winemaking. Bent Creek remains a welcoming destination for wine enthusiasts seeking authentic, small-production wines in a scenic, low-key setting. Visitors enjoy an intimate tasting room experience with vineyard views, picnic areas, and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere—often described as a peaceful spot at the end of the road.
Earl Ault, owner and winemaker of Cedar Mountain Winery / Port Works, shared his expertise in fortified wines with the Bent Creek founders. His hands-on guidance helped them craft award-winning Port-style wines. Earl and his wife Linda were well-respected figures in the Livermore Valley wine community, known for their kindness and creativity combining wine with art and cuisine.
