Tamas Estates
Tamas Estates was a celebrated boutique winery renowned for infusing Livermore Valley's sun-kissed terroir with the vibrant soul of Italian winemaking. The winery produced approachable, fruit-forward wines that bridged Old World heritage with New World innovation. Situated at 5565 Tesla Road in Livermore, within the expansive Wente Vineyards estate, it featured a refined tasting room adjacent to Wente's main facility—a cozy space with low ceilings, tile floors, a marble-topped bar, and a charming mini-patio graced by a bubbling fountain. Open daily, it offered intimate tastings of small-lot, estate-grown varietals, emphasizing sustainable farming and hand-harvested fruit.
The winery's portfolio spotlighted Italian-inspired reds like Sangiovese (bright cherry and spice notes), Barbera (juicy, rustic with tobacco undertones), and Nebbiolo (elegant rose-petal aromas), alongside crisp whites such as Pinot Grigio (yeasty, Juicyfruit-gum freshness from Monterey vineyards). Signature blends included the crowd-pleasing Vino Rosso (a lively mix of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Barbera) and the premium Prima Classe line—artisan gems like a super-Tuscan red and Barbera Port, crafted with gentle crushing, hand-punching, and extended oak aging for layered complexity.
Tamas Estates History
Founded in 1984 as Iván Tamás Winery by Hungarian dissident Iván Tamás Fuezy and industry veteran Steve Mirassou (of the storied Mirassou family), the venture began with sourcing grapes in California, where Fuezy had honed his craft after fleeing communism. By the late 1980s their partnership continued in the Livermore Valley, known for its warm days, cool bay breezes, and gravelly soils—ideal for creating bold, expressive reds. Renamed Tamas Estates, it quickly earned acclaim for Italian varietals, uncommon in California at that time. Through the 1990s the winery built a reputation for high-quality affordable wines like Barbera and Sangiovese that paired seamlessly with cuisine.
In 2001, Wente Family Estates acquired the winery, integrating it into their portfolio alongside Murrieta’s Well while preserving its Italian focus. Production shifted to Wente's Tesla Road facility. The tasting room opened adjacent to Wente's expansive Estate Winery, offering a more intimate counterpoint with private events and wine club perks. By the 2010s, Tamas had rebranded elements like its Vino Rosso as "Double Decker Red," aligning with Wente's innovative spirit. Though the dedicated label has faded, Tamas's legacy endures in Wente's small-lot Italian varietals and Livermore's embrace of global grapes—a testament to Fuezy and Mirassou's vision of honoring heritage while adapting to California's evolving wine landscape.
Affordable and food-friendly, Ivan Tamas wines (produced at around 60,000 cases annually) captured Livermore's gravelly soils and Mediterranean climate, drawing locals and tourists for relaxed pours, monthly food-pairing adventures, and whimsical events like the Cannoli Festival, all in a welcoming atmosphere that celebrated global varietals with California flair.
