Ryhan Estate Vineyards
Ryhan Estate Vineyards was a family-owned boutique winery in Livermore Valley, specializing in small-lot, innovative red blends and varietals sourced from premium California appellations like Napa Valley, Alexander Valley, and Amador County. Known for its experimental approach, it produced three-varietal reds such as the award-winning Rouge-Sang Red Blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Refosco, Syrah, and Petite Sirah), alongside Malbec, Syrah, and Pinot Noir, emphasizing unique bouquets, balanced complexity, and terroir-driven flavors from diverse soils and microclimates. The casual tasting room at 5385 East Avenue offered weekend flights in a welcoming, innovative space that blended tradition with modern techniques, aiming to elevate Livermore's profile among wine enthusiasts.

Ryhan Estate Vineyards History
Established in 2007 by a family with deep roots in grape growing and winemaking, Ryhan Estate Vineyards debuted with its signature three-varietal red wines, marking an innovative entry into Livermore's historic wine scene—California's oldest continuously producing region since the 1840s. Drawing grapes from renowned sites in Napa, Alexander, and Amador valleys to capitalize on their specific soils and temperature ranges, the winery quickly gained acclaim, including a silver medal at the 2008 Grand Harvest Festival Competition for its 2004 Rouge-Sang Red Blend. As part of Livermore's renaissance with over 50 wineries by the 2010s, it fostered a collaborative ethos through tastings and events. Ryhan Estate Vineyards leaves a legacy of boundary-pushing blends that honored the valley's pioneering spirit.

The 2004 Rouge-Sang was a flagship release that embodied Ryhan’s mission: to fuse California power with Old World intrigue. Refosco, in particular, was a bold choice—rarely seen outside Italy’s Friuli region—adding a rustic, iron-like edge that set the wine apart in blind tastings. Though the winery closed around 2013, this blend remains a collector’s footnote in Livermore’s modern wine renaissance.

In Mustard and Mayonnaise, Joanne Moomau Butterfield evokes a bygone era when Livermore's vineyards and orchards framed a world of tight-knit community and resilient spirit. Her prose is warm and unpretentious, like a conversation over coffee—reminiscent of Laura Ingalls Wilder's reflective charm but grounded in California's Tri-Valley soil.
Short chapters capture fleeting moments—first crushes at school dances, the thrill of summer harvests, and the quiet resilience of a large household—blending humor with poignant reflections.
