Wente Vineyards Estate Winery is No Longer Open to the Public

Wente Vineyards Estate Winery
Wente Vineyards Estate Winery, located at 5565 Tesla Road in Livermore, is the historic flagship property of Wente Family Vineyards. German immigrant Carl H. (C.H.) Wente founded the winery in 1883 after purchasing acreage in the Livermore Valley. He had trained under Charles Krug in Napa Valley and was drawn to the area's gravelly soils, climate, proximity to San Francisco Bay, and access to rail transport.

The Wente Vineyards tasting room opened in 1966, and was one of the first public winery tasting rooms in California. Prior to this, most wineries focused primarily on production, with limited direct-to-consumer access. Wente’s tasting room welcomed guests to experience wines on-site, helping shift the model toward hospitality and tourism. It set a trend that many other California wineries later embraced.

This move helped establish Livermore Valley as an accessible wine destination, distinct from Napa and Sonoma. It drew Bay Area visitors and positioned the region as a growing tourism spot, contributing to its present form as a hub of wine, food, entertainment, and recreation. Wente’s tasting room was a foundational step in transforming California wineries from production facilities into visitor destinations, with ripple effects still visible in Livermore Valley’s thriving wine country scene.

The tasting room operated for decades at the historic Tesla Road site before closing to the public. It now serves primarily as a production and winemaking facility. The property remains central to Wente’s operations and legacy. Tasting and visitor experiences have shifted to the Wente Vineyards Tasting Lounge at 5050 Arroyo Road in Livermore.

C.H. Wente established the first 47-acre vineyard on this site in 1883. A century later Wente Bros. Winery was registered as California Historical Landmark #957. It is the oldest continuously operating, family-owned winery in California. (see plaque below)

Sharing the Vineyard Table: A Celebration of Wine and Food from the Wente Vineyards Restaurant
by Carolyn Wente (President) and Kimball Jones (Executive Chef)
Foreword by Anthony Dias Blue
Released in 2006, this elegant hardcover from the fourth-generation Wente family (America’s oldest continuously operated, family-owned winery) pairs 100+ seasonal recipes from their acclaimed Vineyard Restaurant with Wente wine pairings, stunning photography, and heartfelt tales of Livermore Valley heritage.
Chef Kimball Jones crafts approachable yet refined dishes—think Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Cherry Chutney or Lemon Verbena Panna Cotta—that highlight local produce and the winery’s estate-grown Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and small-lot reds. More than a cookbook, it’s a love letter to sustainable farming, family legacy, and the art of gathering.
