Rios-Lovell Estate Winery

Rios-Lovell Estate Winery

Rios-Lovell Estate Winery is located at 6500 Tesla Road in Livermore, California

Rios-Lovell Estate Winery
The winery's story begins in 1976, when Max Rios purchased the hilltop site on Tesla Road. At the time, he used the land for raising cattle, horses, sheep, and hogs. After taking winemaking classies at UC Davis, he decided to plant vineyards on the land, a well-timed move as the wine industry was gaining momentum in the Livermore Valley.

Rios-Lovell Estate Winery was officially established and opened in 1994. Max Rios and his family developed the property from the ground up, planting a dozen varieties of vines across much of the estate and building a full production winery. Max, a third-generation cabinetmaker, built much of the winery's cabinetry himself. The winery is a true estate operation, with grapes grown, produced, and bottled on-site.

By the early 2010s, Rios-Lovell had expanded into a multifaceted wine production and event destination spanning 64 acres. The property features Tuscan-style buildings, lush gardens, picnic grounds, a gazebo, an event center, and spaces for concerts and private gatherings. It produces approximately 30 different wines, with a focus on handcrafted reds and other varietals suited to the Livermore Valley terroir, many of which have earned medals.

Founder Max Rios is known for his fascination with how different grape varieties create unique flavors, as well as his welcoming personality. Visitors frequently note his hands-on involvement with the winery and the personal warmth he brings to the tasting experience. The Rios-Lovell family created a popular wine destination with event spaces, gardens, and a European village-like atmosphere.

In Mustard and Mayonnaise, Joanne Moomau Butterfield serves up a heartfelt platter of personal anecdotes from her childhood in mid-20th-century Livermore, California. As the youngest of eight siblings, Butterfield (a Livermore High School class of 1959 alumna) captures the unvarnished joy and chaos of family life with the precision of a cherished recipe.
The title whimsically nods to a quirky family sandwich staple that symbolizes the simple, flavorful joys of everyday life, much like the book's essence: unpretentious yet deeply satisfying.
