In Spanish, Las Positas means "little watering holes," much like the streams and arroyos found coursing through the Livermore Valley terrain. The name Las Positas Vineyards was chosen after a careful study of Livermore Valley history.

It was discovered that city namesake Robert Livermore's property was called Rancho Las Positas. In 1839, a land grant for 8,800 acres was given by the governor to Robert Livermore and his business partner, Jose Noriega. Shortly thereafter, the first commercial vineyards in California were planted by Robert Livermore on the Rancho Las Positas property.

The actual Las Positas Vineyards are located on 20 acres at Kalthoff Common in the southwest corner of the valley, featuring small parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petite Verdot, Tempranillo, Barbera, Petite Sirah, and Chardonnay.
