Valor Winery is a veteran-owned and operated winery located in Livermore. Founded by United States Marine Corps veteran Joshua "Josh" Laine, it grew out of his earlier venture, Lavish Laines Winery, which he started shortly after leaving the Marines. Initially a small operation housed in an old school bus, Lavish Laines evolved into Valor Winery. The rebranding emphasized its mission: to honor military service, provide meaningful employment, camaraderie, and a supportive environment for veterans transitioning to civilian life.
The winery maintains its own small vineyard plantings, including Chardonnay and Zinfandel. It also sources grapes from local growers, as well as from Napa and Lodi AVAs. Production focuses on approachable, quality wines with minimal intervention, emphasizing viticulture over heavy chemical adjustments. Signature and notable wines have included Sangiovese, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Semillon, and Gewürztraminer.
Valor Winery stands out for its commitment to veterans from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. It employs them in every aspect of operations—from vineyard work and grape harvesting to winemaking, bottling, labeling, sales, and marketing. Many participants have served in conflicts like Iraq and Afghanistan, and the winery serves as a sanctuary that offers job skills, financial independence, and peer support while addressing challenges such as PTSD.
Valor Winery blends Livermore’s wine heritage with a powerful story of service and resilience. It turns the craft of winemaking into a vehicle for veteran empowerment while producing solid, character-driven wines. Valor also collaborates with organizations like Vets & Vines Foundation and the Wounded Warrior Project to help veterans readjust through agriculture and viticulture.
