The Steven Kent Winery
The Steven Kent Winery is a boutique producer rooted in one of America's oldest winemaking family legacies. It was founded in 1996 by Steven Kent Mirassou, a sixth-generation winemaker from the historic Mirassou family. Steven and his father joined forces with a mission: to produce world-class Bordeaux-style wines, while highlighting Livermore Valley's unique terroir.
The Mirassou lineage dates back to 1854, when French immigrant Pierre Pellier planted vineyards in California. In the early 1850s Pierre made several trips to France. On one journey, he returned with a wide array of European vine cuttings and fruit tree stock, including grape varieties such as Mourvèdre, Black Burgundy, French Colombard, Chasselas, Fontainebleau, and Pinot Noir. These imports helped establish the French-style wine industry in the Santa Clara Valley.
Like many during the California Gold Rush, Pierre arrived in California seeking fortune in the mines. He and his older brother Louis initially found some success gold mining before shifting to agriculture. The Pellier brothers are credited with introducing key European grape varieties and helping transform the Santa Clara Valley into the "Valley of Heart's Delight," known for its orchards and early wine production—long before it became Silicon Valley. The family endured challenges like Prohibition and continued influencing California winemaking through descendants, including the Mirassou line.
The Mirassou brothers' story exemplifies the blend of Gold Rush opportunism, transcontinental risk-taking, and horticultural innovation that shaped early California wine and fruit industries. In addition to grape vine cuttings, Pierre brought back French prune (prune d'Agen) cuttings, which Louis used to launch the region's famous prune industry. Their efforts directly link to modern producers like Steven Kent Winery through the Mirassou family connection.

North American Wine Routes: A Travel Guide to Wines and Vines, from Napa to Nova Scotia
by Dan Berger and Tony Aspler
Wine writers extraordinaire Dan Berger—former Los Angeles Times columnist and Sonoma-based newsletter publisher—and Tony Aspler, the Toronto Star's longtime wine voice, team up in this panoramic passport to North America's vinous backroads. Spanning 40 meticulously mapped routes across four regions (from California's sun-drenched Livermore Valley to Nova Scotia's tidal vineyards), the book demystifies oenotourism with insider tips on tastings, labels, and direct buys, plus icons for picnic spots, family-friendly stops, and luxe lodgings.
In the Western section, Livermore shines with nods to heritage houses like Steven Kent Winery—where fifth-generation Mirassou scion Steven Kent crafts bold Cabernet Sauvignons from estate vines—and La Rochelle Winery, his Pinot Noir haven honoring the family's 1854 French roots (a brand he acquired in 2005 to revive small-lot gems from leased cool-climate sites).
